What is Botox?

Botox is your best friend if you are trying to reduce wrinkles. Although this medication has been around since the 20’s, it didn’t become popular for anti-aging until about 2002. Now it is a very common medication that is administered with great results but not just for wrinkles. Botox is also used to treat a number of conditions such as neck spasms, excessive sweating, bladder dysfunction, eye twitching and chronic migraines. Now you see why we love it!

How does it work?

Botox temporarily relaxes the muscles and blocks certain chemical signals from nerves that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. You should begin to see the results 3 days after the injections. This effect lasts 3-6 months.

Does it hurt?

You will feel a tiny prick when the Botox is injected but most people do not feel much discomfort during the procedure. At Meira, we normally do not use a topical anesthetic for Botox being injected in the face. If it is being used for other reasons, such as excessive sweating, we may apply a topical anesthetic depending on the location of the procedure.

What can I expect?

We use a very thin needle to inject tiny amounts of Botox into your skin or muscle. The number of injections needed depends on many factors, including the area being treated. It is a quick procedure and you it will not affect your day. We recommend not lying down for at least three hours after Botox. You should not go in hot tubs, saunas, or tanning beds for at least four hours or exercise heavily. Otherwise, you can resume your regular activities right after getting Botox.

How should I prepare?

Remove your makeup before coming to the office, or we can provide remover wipes. Other than that, please make sure to tell us if you are taking any muscle relaxants, sleeping aids or allergy medications. If you take blood thinners, it is recommended that you stop taking them several days beforehand to reduce your risk of bleeding or bruising.

Are there side effects to Botox?

Botox is safe but there are some minor side affects you may experience. These include pain, swelling or bruising. If you experience any other unlikely side effect such as muscle weakness, please call us immediately.
